This spring, a group of Field & Stream editors came together for an intense round of testing to identify the premier trout fly rods available in 2023. Their testing process took place on the scenic Upper Delaware River, an unofficial home for the publication, which offered ideal conditions to rigorously evaluate functionality and performance.
Executive Editor Dave Hurteau emphasized the necessity of thorough testing, saying, "We decided it was time to get the team back together…and conduct a second full-blown test of the best trout fly rods on the market."
Over the past three years, the variety of fly rods on offer has expanded with both new releases and enduring favorites maintaining their quality. The editors reached out to manufacturers to gather their top 5-weight fly rods, including budget and value options. While some companies launched new models, many held onto their successful rods from previous seasons. Importantly, the focus centered on testing rods demonstrated consistent excellence, regardless of their release dates.
"Since this is a test of the best trout fly rods and not just the newest, we kept many of our original reviews because these rods are still top performers," Hurteau explained.
The team rigorously evaluated over 20 fly rods but ultimately awarded spots on their list to 17 standout models, indicating a slightly higher bar for quality this year. Among them, the Sage R8 Core earned the title of "Best Overall" fly rod. Its blend of sensitivity and power makes it suitable for both seasoned and novice anglers alike.
"When you pick up the R8 Core, you can immediately feel the difference in quality and performance," said one of the testers. “It just feels right.”
"It’s like using a finely tuned instrument—every cast counts, and the Superfine makes it easy to place your fly exactly where you want it," remarked a veteran fly angler during the testing.
Budget-conscious anglers were not left behind either, as the Orvis Clearwater took home the title of "Best Budget." This rod provides access to quality performance without breaking the bank, proving that affordability does not need to sacrifice effectiveness.
"It’s a reliable workhorse for everyday fishing,” a tester noted. “The Clearwater is perfect for those who love the sport but may not fish every day.”
Emerging as the "Best Value" was the Douglas DXF Gen 2, which showcased exceptional performance relative to its price point. The team noted that balancing cost with performance is essential for many anglers, and this rod delivered impressively across the board.
"Douglas continues to raise the standard, and this rod is a prime example,” one reviewer said. “You get so much bang for your buck."
Other notable rods included the Douglas Sky G, honored as "Best of the 2025 Test,” and the Thomas & Thomas Paradigm, which is cherished for its craftsmanship and sensitivity. Each rod identified was scrutinized for casting ability, comfort, and versatility in various fishing environments.
"Every model has its unique qualities," noted Hurteau. “Our goal was to highlight the rods that anglers can depend on, season after season."
The comprehensive list of tested rods includes a range of options: Temple Fork Outfitters’ LK Legacy and Blue Ribbon, G. Loomis NRX+Fly, Airlite Vitesse, and many others each exemplifying innovation and quality in design.
Looking ahead, these insights guide anglers towards making well-informed decisions as they prepare their tackle boxes for the upcoming season. Whether fishing local streams or embarking on expeditions, the right fly rod can elevate one’s angling experience to new heights.
